Peace Corps

The Peace Corps is partnered with PEPFAR. Volunteers work to improve community health and mitigate the effects of HIV around the world. Peace Corps volunteers work by encouraging healthy habits and preventative measures.

PEPFAR

PEPFAR is the most well known aids relief organization. PEPFAR stands for The U.S. President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief.  It is the largest commitment by any nation to combat a single disease internationally. PEPFAR is a part of the U.S. President’s Global Health Initiative. President Bush issued the PEPFAR initiative. The organization works all around the world including South Africa.

SANAC

       

 SANAC stands for The South African National AIDS Council. It is a voluntary association of institutions established by the national cabinet of the South African Government to build consensus across government, civil society and all other stakeholders to drive an enhanced country response to HIV, TB and STIs (About SANAC 1).

CAPRISA

CAPRISA stands for The Centre for the AIDS Program of Research in South Africa.  It was founded by the Universities of Natal, Cape Town, and the Western Cape, the Trustees of Columbia University in the City of New York, and the National Institute for Communicable Diseases. The three main goals are to research prevention and treatment of HIV/AIDS, to build research infrastructure and capacity, and to train more researchers in South Africa.

Prevention Statistics

Since 2000, 30 million new infections were prevented, nearly 8 million deaths averted, and 15 million people living with HIV are now receiving treatment (Unicefusa 1).

HIV/AIDS

The human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) is a retrovirus that infects cells of the immune system, destroying or impairing their function. Acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS), is the most advanced stage of HIV. It can take up to

10-15 years for an HIV-infected person to develop AIDS.

Treatment

There is currently no cure for HIV/Aids. But with  antiretroviral treatment, the progression of HIV in the body can be slowed tremendously.

Transmission

HIV is transmitted by unprotected sexual intercourse, transfusion of contaminated blood, sharing of contaminated needles, and between a mother and her child during pregnancy, childbirth and breastfeeding.

Demographics

Female adults who are under 40 years of age are most affected by HIV/AIDS. About 80% of 20 to 24 year old South Africans with HIV/AIDS are women. Only about 33% of 25 to 29 year old South Africans with HIV/AIDS are men.

-South Africa has the biggest and most high profile HIV/Aids epidemic in the world. 
-There are 7 million people living with aids just in South Africa.
-180,000 deaths are related to aids.
